Found these at Scatsta Airport lately. I am assuming they are M/F of same species. Size was about 7-8mm I think. Anyone know their Chironomids?

hi, I don´t see clearly the wing, but at least the first one seems Tanypodinae to me (though in case the wing has scales it could be Buchonomyiinae (i´ve never seen one but you´ve got one single species there (?) That male antenna is typical from Ceratopogonidae (a former subfamily of Chironomidae) but there are like that also in Chironomidae, i hope anyone helps

Hi Paqui, thanks for taking the time to look at this fly...Chironomids normally get binned, but this one looked a bit different so I thought I would give it a try here.
The wing isn't out of focus, it's just the way they look, kind of smokey looking and appear to be covered in tiny hairs or something. Here are a couple of closer pics of the female's wing including a better lateral view.

Yeah it's a Tanypodinae, but after that...the spanners I fear ! If you still have the male, send it along (in alcohol) and I'll ID it for you.

Thanks for that. I'm not really a camera buff, but some of the people on here are sure to give you some pointers as to which camera to go for. There are many on this site who are far better photographers than I'll ever be. I wont say who they are as they might be embarrassed :|..bastards :|. This was shot with a Samsung GX20 fitted with a Schneider Kreuznach D-XENON 1:2.8 100mm Macro and going by the shadows I had my Sigma EM-140DG Ring Flash fitted at the time. I've just got the Ring Flash and haven't sussed out how to set it properly. I have a hatred of Manuals so I probably haven't got the camera set up properly either...but it works.

I'll keep an eye out for one of these to send to you. At the moment the windowsill of the Control Tower here at the Airport is covered in plastic vending cups with a fly in each waiting for a space in the deepfreeze, which is also full. Hope nobody wants coffee in the morning, there seems to be a shortage of cups...:D

See planes...can hardly see the Apron for fog. Visability down to 50 metres :| and hammering down with rain. I'll need to get some vials and alcohol soon as I have some flies to send to Paul and Stephane too. I sent Stephane a dry fly and he reckons it arrived in good enough condition. I couldn't get into town to get alcohol as I have been working nights all week :|. WE have enough real cups/mugs, it is the punters who will have to do without :D Balleaux, or is it Gattocks for them.
