Apologies for the dreadful photo, couldn't get anything better in the wind and sun. It doesn't quite match anything I've seen previously and I can get nowhere keying it, can't see enough detail, but perhaps one of the experts will recognise it?

That's interesting; I did an image search for Meigenia and came up with this -

- a fly I'd photographed last August, same site. If I see it again I'll try to catch it - it would be nice to know which species it is.

If it is a Meigenia then it needs to be a male and we need to see genitalia :D

I agree, looks Meigenia-ish and given the English weather conditions, the pic is not that bad at all.

However, we can't see the apical scutellar bristles, to confirm our hunch.

Brrrr - don't mention the British weather ... I just got used to 25C in Moscow - then I had to come home to 10C :S
