Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Two small flies found recently

Hi everyone, new member here.
I spotted this small fly on my kitchen window and managed to get a hand held shot of it. Some have mentioned Biblio or Dolichopidade and a photographer mentioned something about an asassin fly due to the shape of the antennae, but I have no idea. I know my spiders but am just learning about flies.

Then later I found a similar looking fly out in the garden. Note the pollen grains on the head.

Top one: Empis, female. Bottom one: Bibio, male.

Oh quick query, how do you sex flies?

Pointy end : female. Knobbly end : male (doesn't always work though).
