Hi,
this species is causing me problems.
Is there any way to determine what it is despite the photograph (which is the only one I
could make before it sssssssssss'ed off ;) )?
It was definitely larger than
Culex pipiens.
Hamburg, Germany, on a fence rail surrounded by birch trees and water etc,05-May-2010
Thanks & Rgds

I think Culiseta annulata. If you remember a white dorsal stripe on the thorax and head then it is Aedes albopictus, but I hope you didn't.

Hi,
this is interesting....in a different forum I was told that it was "definitely not Culiseta annulata because their legs aren't quite so significantly striped" and that it must be "Aedes spec" etc.
I didn't see any dorsal stripes - of which I am glad ;)

I think this is
Ochlerotatus (formerly
Aedes), rather than
Culiseta. Apart from differences in the leg colour, the abdominal shape is too tapered and pointed for
Culiseta
