Hi Tim, maybe you should check my post of yesterday with a ? Scathophaga inquinata which looked just like this fly to my untutored eyes. Stephane Lebrun just confirmed that ID as long as it had a plumose arista. Mine did when I checked at high res, so look to the arista in your original shots!

Thanks Nick, it's just barely perceptible on the original but definitely plumose.
