OK I'm sure this is a Pollenia cluster fly from the golden hairs on the thorax and I know there are many similar species, but is it ever possible to identify the species from a sharp photo like this, or are the defining character really subtle?

Hi Nick
If you use the Forum Search and look for Pollenia you will find 17 pages containing 329 threads (including this one) of people looking for ID's for Pollenia,or where Pollenia are mentioned. There are some very sharp images including genitalia which haven't even received a reply :|. Guess they are just impossible from photo's.
Regards Roger
BTW...You're not a policeman by any chance, with a name like NickU???
EDIT; An example from above 329 threads, not Robert's sharpest ever image ;), but the answer would be the same whatever the image I think.

Hi Roger
OK fine, point well taken; Pollenia sp. is good enough for me and I'm not about to start dissecting genitalia to get more specific...
And no, I'm not a policeman, but maybe I did miss my calling with a moniker like NickU!
