Can anyone help identify this fly, which I think is a Muscid, maybe Phaonia sp. viarum??

Looks like Phaonia rufiventris but let's wait for the experts:)

OK thanks Niels. That was one of my other "possible" IDs on this, but I don't have keys to know what to look for... Maybe an expert will chime in!

??? That species looks totally different, has an orange red scutellum and abdomen: http://www.dipter...to_id=2588
Could be Helina impuncta perhaps, but I am no expert, too.

Thanks Juergen for the new suggestion, I'll find some photos of H. impuncta to compare my fly with, and maybe a muscid expert will help as well!

Ok many thanks all. It does seem a very good match with H.impuncta photos in the gallery and it seems to be a common UK species.
