Hi,

I met KWQ yesterday and he gave me this small 3mm Tachinidae for photomodel. The face is worn as the fly dried and the antenna is now inside the head. Very large and bright orange and well wisible anyway. There is no real label but just a date (?) 24.6.54. Any tips what this could be ? Some Rondania maybe ? Kaj can write more details himself.

It seems to match with Rondania fasciata from my non expert point of view.

I have only seen 1 Rondania fasciata (they're very rare here) but it looked just like this one :)

Thanks for the beautiful picture Jari F and your tentative determination Stephane! R, fasciata would be a good record from Finland although not revolutionary.

I just wonder what seemed to be wrong because we didn\t unequivocally arrive to that conclusion with Tschorsnig and Herting...

The general appearance in these pictures seems pretty much the same, but what about the striking colour difference in antennae? Variation/dimorfism?

It was a very old specimen (24.v.1951) so there is a possibility that there has been some deterioration.

The specimen of Jari is a female. The specimen of Chris is a male.

Rondania fasciata has strong sexual dimorphisme. Female of Rondania fasciata has lighter colouring and has "... Kopf weissgelb ... Hinterkopf und Peristom mit weissen Haaren, ... Fühler lebhaft orangegeld ... Thorax schwarz mit sehr dichter grauer Bereifung ..." (Mesnil in Lindner).

OK, now I believe that Rondania fasciata 1 f is the correct determination. The locality was the south-western archipelago, I think this is a locally good record, anyhow.
