Photographed this one on 19th January this year in my garden. Which species, sex, and how do you tell them apart....I can recognise
C.frigida males by their more spikey leg hairs but the others all look the same to an idiot like me....anyone wish to explain what to look for, in language understandable by an idiot?

Coelopa frigida, due to the bristly genae.
check Lita Greves "Litt om Tangfluer", Insekt-Nytt 24(1) 1999, which has illustrations of C. frigida and C. pilipes on pp 16-17. You will find it here:

Thanks for the link Viktor. Drawings show it clearly. I'll have to get SWMBO to translate the text,(that should please her) as the only Norwegian I know is "Jeg snakker ikke Norsk" ;), which doesn't get you very far.
