I just know these are going to turn out to be something I should recognise, but I need help...
From 26 December 2009, there were about 10 on the wall of my sister's house in Canberra, about 12mm.

Might well be Xylomyidae... (alternatively a Stratiomyidae).

I didn't think of Xylomyidae. My best guess was Stratiomyidae.
I'm struggling with these Australian flies not just because they are Australian, but because I've done hardly any field work in 2009, and you use it or lose it. Also what literature I have (European) is still packed in boxes from our move in May while we renovate the house.

This is Exaireta spinigera - an Australian stratiomyid that now also occurs in California!
