Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Tabanus sp.

Hello together,

on the 7th of June in Germany, Nordrhein Wesphalen, Axel Steiner and me found a Tabanus. So I show one pic of him and one from me :).

Is any nearer detamination possible.

Any indication of size ?

If it is 10-11 mm., it might very wellbe the male of Tabanus maculicornis.

If it is bigger than 15 mm. it must be something els.

Hello Theo,

Axel and me think that this fly was much bigger than 15 mm, maybe 20 mm. We both saw it at the same time from 2-3 m ago, sitting on the ground.

But this informations make the determination not easier, as I think.

Estimates without measurements are very unreliable, in my experience, often off by a factor of 2.
20 mm is bigger than the biggest Syrphid, to give a reference.
.
Anyway, I don't think it will be able to suggest a name with some credibility.
