I have the problem with determination this fly - in Polish EntomoForum one of specialist determinated this insect to the: Bombomyia sp. - is it possible to say anything more about it? Lebanon, XB96, Al-Janub Reg., Sur District, Al Naqoura. 20.09.2004.
P.S. I have the problem with attachment - the small one in my avatar...

Hi
two pairs of the wings?? :o It looks like the famous Bombomyia discoidea from Spain... :) But we need one much bigger photo.
CHeck the spaces (it cannot have any spaces!) and file size must be below 190 kb.
ps it was the shadow! :D eheh In avatar it really seems to be two real pair of wings. ;)

wait for final confirmation of David Gibbs. He will give the final word. But if not discoidea.. it would be a new one for me. :)
This fly did loose its greyish
microtrichia (=small "hairs") on the scutum...
See here for comparation:

Thank you - it is very interesting - I will be waiting for the final confirmation of David Gibbs.
And the additional question -is it (if it is B. discoidea) rare in Europe and what is area of it global distribution?
P.S. many thanks for the link...

well there is in Spain. Maybe Portugal has. it is very probably because the Bombomyia was found very near Portugal! It is not rare... just overlooked (?) I think.
It was found in Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Russia and Ukraine.
Ah... one thing: the homepage has a photo of one male Bombomyia discoidea on a dry thistle... showing well the dimorphism sexual in this species.

Many thanks for confirmation David.
I have another question: in Fauna Europea I found information about two species of Bombomyia from Lebanon - the same like from Europe - are there only these two?

Oh, thank you - it is very interesting work, but in this version is mistake - B. stictica is present in Poland, but really is absent, I think. I have looked to the World Catalog of Bee Flies (Diptera: Bombyliidae): Corrigenda and Addenda NEAL L. EVENHUIS & DAVID J. GREATHEAD in ZOOTAXA from 2003, too.
In this version distrybution of B. stictica is correct...
