Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Help with ID of Mr helmet head

Unfortunately these are not the best photos but this little fly didn't sit still. Found in my garden in South Africa. Very small little fly. I named it Mr Helmet Head until I can hopefully get an ID from one of the experts on this site.:)

Bibionidae, Dilophus or very near to that genus.

Thank you very much for the ID Paul. I had a look in the gallery and it seems this is a male. I was also wondering if there is a big size variation. I've seen the flies with the amber bodies and dark wings before and they were much larger than this little fly.:)

Sometimes there is a reasonable difference in size within or between sexes, but combining this with different body colour and wing colour, they are likely to be different species.
