Thanks for your help. Never seen this hover before. But I'm finding a lot of flies I never noticed before now

this is not syrphid but a Stratiomyidae fly.

I wasn't sure if it might be somthing other than a hover fly.
He was friendly enough and actually sat easily on my finger

Hehe, that also sounds more like an odontomyiine than a syrphid. :D
