These flies were caught 06-13-09 in Moscow district (Russia). Is first
T. bovinus or I wrong (body length is 12 mm)? Second fly seems to be
Heptatoma pellucens (body length 10 mm)...
I ask for your help.:)

Hi Culex,
Second one is indeed Heptatoma pellucens, pozjalsta.
The first one, however, is more like Tabanus bromius.
Can you tell if there have been eye bands and if so, how many ?

Hi Theo!
Many thanks for confirmation!
Of course, Tabanus had eye bands. As I remember, there were two green bands on general purple-violet background of eyes.

OK, then it is an rather orange female of T. bromius.
By the way, T. bovinus does NOT have eyebands.
Please always note the number of bands in Tabanidae, especially if you have little experience.

I'm very sorry, I think I had too little to eat today
Of course it is a female of Hybomitra. The eyes are hairy.
So it should have had 3 bands.
Impossible to say more, possibly lundbecki
Forget the previous posts

Hehe)) You need to eat more.
Yes, possibly I wrong and it had indeed 3 bands. Because of the small experience I have not paid attention to it. But say, all flies of genus Tabanus don't have hair on eyes?
And actually excuse me for what I harass you.)) I must study the Diptera keys assiduously.
OK, thank you, Theo!

?Harass me? Not at all !
All Hybomitra have hairy eyes and most Tabanus have bare eyes. The Tabanus with hairy eyes are southern and not to be found around Moscow (and have a completely different abdominal pattern)
