This little Piophilid was one of the many of flies that I found on a piece of pitch in the forest. The flies had it mistaken for dead meat. Calliphorids, Sarcophagids, Wasps etc were there. The sad result were hundreds of dead larvae on the pitch.

The piophilid (Stearibia, I think):

I'm curious --- is this pitch something from a tree or some sort of petrochemical spill --- I've never encountered such a blob in forests around eastern north america. Either way it would interesting to know what compounds attract the insects and if the fauna is unique.

It is some petrochemical materaial probably left there by woodcutters. I've also never such n aggregation of flies on pitch... Also, there were a lot of Staphylinidae there.

Can anyone give a name to this one?

Let's try... It is not Stearibia as it has orbital bristles. The head seems completely black? If so, would suggest Parapiophila sp. (Of European species calceata and dudai have black heads).

I don't have much feeling to this family, so I would need to see the specimen under the scope to say more.
