Hello,

Concerning this Tabanidae (June 2009, Saint-Nazaire-le-Désert (26)(South of France)) we hesitate between D. ater and D. carbonarius
Its size is about : 14mm

What is your opinion ?

I can understand that.
It is difficult to see from this pic.

To be honest, I don't expect carbonarius as north as St. Nazaire.

I'm sorry, I mixed up carbonarius with anthracinus.
This is definitely NOT carbonarius, it might be taken for anthracinus.
However, after checking this literature I have little doubt it is D. ater, a female

Caution, this is not the harbour St Nazaire. Departement 26 (Drôme) is in the southern part of France. But maybe it doesn't matter, after all.

My mistake.
It is relevant.
Without a frontal shot, it is either ater or anthracinus.

I have no frontal shot.
Thank you Theo.
