And finally I found of these large Tabanids a victim of a hit and run car accident allowing this rather mediocre picture.

When you see them flying (or hear them just flying around you) they are very impressive; at close range slightly less, though it remains a sizable fly.

I know the distinction in females is tough, so will it remain indeterminate?

Jura, Mesnois ca 400 m altitiude.

Neither.
It is T. eggeri: antennae black, first posterior cell strongly narrowed. Rather far to the north !

Thanks for disconfirming...

Is eggeri indeed smaller dan bromius/sudeticus? That would explain my disappointment about its size!
