The picture was taken today in our house Kent I'd say the insect was about 4 cm long body and about 5 cm wingspan. If it helps we live next to a small stream.

Thanks very much for anyone who can help

I think I'm being a bit dim about the way images are attached so this is a link to a picture on Picasaweb http://tinyurl.co...

Resembles Tipula maxima (cp. http://www.biopix...000001.JPG) as to wing pattern, but Tipulidae are difficult to identify from photos. T. maxima should be still bigger than yours - feed it better :D!

My wife thought it was quite big enough already! I relocated to the great outdoors so it could go on doing whatever Tipula Maxima do. I suppose our location next to a stream adds to the likelihood because the larva is described as having an aquatic phase

Thanks

To have a stream nearby gives the opportunity to watch a lot of interesting small animals - enjoy it like Tipula maxima enjoys its regained freedom! BTW, welcome to the fly forum! To post images is quite easy if you keep in mind that the image name must not contain spaces and the image be not bigger than 194 KB.
