This little fly sat preening itself on my jeans while I was out in the garden...Any idea who it is...Family ??

Hi Lars, Sorry for the delay in replying, forgot about this one :|.
I thought I was the only one to make wild guesses here. Welcome to the Club. Membership has just doubled to 2.
Well if it is as you say I doubt if I'll get confirmation as the photo doesn't really show enough detail for an Antho. to ID it as such. Thanks for the reply...Regards Roger

Not vagans, arista appears bare and tibiae dark. Otherwise difficult to say other than a female antho. The mid tibia appears to have an av seta which reduces the number of species a bit. Can't see the hind tibia though, which would be helpful

A wild guess might be Pegoplata infirma Mg female; this is not a definite det.

Roger, there are two different types of wild guesses. One is where you don't really know what it is even if you had a specimen under the microscope. The other wild guess if what I had intended. I don't know what the species in the photo is because I can't see the critical details which are not in focus, or not sufficiently close up, or not in the photo at all. The general appearance of anthomyiids are not sufficient to always give a name. If I had the specimen under the microscope I could make a determination. I shall be careful not to use the term 'wild guess' in the future
