Lots of these small (<4mm ish) flies about at the moment. Are they identifiable???

I'd never have guessed that...most of the ones I've seen before have that light brown kind of sheen from certain angles (worn look?), These must be new out of the box.

The "Famous List" of which you speak contains many wondrous names,:D one of which is the species
Fannia serena. So this is what it looks like...
