I thought this was a Scathophaga stercoraria but apparently I'm mistaken :( Can someone point me in the right direction, and if you have the patience, explain the distinguishing features.
Size is about 8mm, collected on a windowsill in Brussels, Belgium.
Thanks, Andrew

Welcome to the forum Andrew :)
It's hard to say what the difference is between yours and
Scathophaga because to people who study either group of flies they are just
very different! ;) Have a look at the photos in the gallery (Scathophagidae vs. Muscidae) and I am sure you will spot where you went wrong.

Thanks for the ID, there is a lot to learn. I've ordered a copy of the "European Families of the Diptera" but I have no doubt there is a long way to go ...
