This is not my picture but was taken in Trinidad as a picture of a "large mosquito". I'm using it with permission of the owner just for ID purposes.
Any ideas on what it is ? seems to be a cross between a cranefly and mosquito :)

Perhaps Limoniidae ?

Tipuloidea, possibly Limoniidae. There are snouty Limoniids even in Europe. In Japan I found Elephantomyia, which has an extremely long proboscis (photos in my Japan gallery).

Thanks for the further ID info dhalma :)

Should add the original photographer is relieved by the ID - they have been having outbreaks of Yellow fever and Dengue caused by mosquitos :)
