Hello!
Nothing to identify this time (at least I hope, I've got these right... ;)), I only wanted to show my first flies this year. After there have been near arctic temperatures since Christmas (lowest in my region: -26,4 °C), now the snow begins to melt. Yesterday we had a sunny day at 6 °C, and many small flies (Muscidae, Anthomyiidae, Heleomyzidae...) and midges were flying around (and
honey bees!). Unfortunately only good old
Phaonia tuguriorum and some Trichoceridae liked to be photographed...

Nice findings Juergen. I've only seen a single little Sphaeroceridae and it did its best to avoid my camera :@

Hello, Roger and Lars!
You are both a little bit nearer to the north pole, aren't you? B)
But so many insects other than the flies did not occur here, too, yesterday. Only many
Collembola, some
ladybird beetles and the always active
anthocorid bug nymphs at the ashes at the forest. But I did not spot a single spider...

Hi Juergen
Yes I'm fairly far north, but temps. have been -6C as a minimum. Sea temp. keeps the land temp. a bit higher than inland. Nowhere in Shetland is more than 5 miles from the sea. Now the frosty weather has gone...back to gales..50Kts last night. I think today even the birds are flying backwards..no chance for flies. Regards Roger.

Hello Juergen,
The north pole, right. Last week we had at least -10C and my balcony windows were covered with thin ice. Beatiful patterns but I felt
very close to the north pole!
I did find some other insects such as a few barklice, a ladybud (not quite sure which species) and a still unidentified Cicadellidae.

Ah, the North Pole was in Belgium last week -19 C for several nights in a row in my garden. I was reduced to hunting for spiders in the cellar. Lots of Pholcus, but nothing else so far. But it is now above freezing again , and who knows ?...
Cheers
Philippe
