As a guess, I'd say female

Aplomyia is excellent, well spotted.
Somehow, it is very greyish for female confinis. And it seems there is an appendix to bend in vein M. Look at the left wing in both pics.
If so, it is Aplomyia metallica.
Pity we can't see the palps.

The appendix if present and not an arteface is clearly absent from one wing and may be absent from both wings. The fly appeared metallic blackish in the nature, but somehow it reflected the flash quite a lot and is greyer on the photo. I try to locate the full size image.

Yes, flash or direct sunlight can fool you a lot.
