Hello!

These flies sunbathing on a tree trunk last Sunday (northwest Germany) were only about 3-3.5 mm long. What are they? Thanks in advance!

Hello!

No suggestions for these? I found them interesting: not much bigger than a Drosophila but looking like a larger calyptrate fly.

The size is interesting, and one might think this is an anthomyiid. But I think I can see 4 post dorsocentral setae on the left side, and there is only one species of antho with 4, Egle cilipes. It is too small for this species and anyway it appears in early spring! So I can't make any more suggestions. If you had a specimen I could tell you what it is. I would point out that as far as Anthomyiidae are concerned, only about 10% of the photos in diptera.info can be recognised, because the important characters are not visible. So to expect an identification from a photo, unless all the setae (for a start) are in focus, no det, is possible.:|

Hello, Michael!

Thanks! I found this especially remarkable because of its small size and had hoped that (and the late appearing) would be a limiting factor for determination.
