Can anyone tell me what this is? Very distinctive looking spatulate tibia.

Male, 3.5mm, from 19 May 2008, lowland (95masl) central France, la Brenne, in a field occasionally grazed by cattle, but showing signs of scrub regeneration.

And is this the female? 3mm, from an adjoining field, grazed by horses, same date. The legs are slightly less flattened.

Not E. aestiva.
Empis (Coptophlebia) sp.

Oops, Igor is right. The top image should be E. (C.) volucris.

Sheesh...! and I've already done a label in my bestest minutest writing...(just teasing :P)

Is the second image the matching female, or can we not give her a name?

Could not say for certain it was female, let alone of the same species...

Ah. What do you need to see to make a determination?

Better iew of the abdominal tip. It looks as if the eyes are contiguous and that makes me suspect it is the male of another species.

OK, thanks. I'll soften it up and do some more photos in the next few weeks.
