Hello,

what flies are these two. I found them beginning of october in a forest region near Cologne. Length was about 8 or 9mm. Perhaps genus Phaonia?

Thanks,
Michael

Hello, Michael!

The first one should be a female Phaonia rufiventris.

The second fly could be Phaonia valida indeed, but I can't really see whether the vein M is somewhat bent apically (it could be tricky on picture), whether occipital hairs are reddish in lower part... (so it could be P. errans too). ;)

Thank you for your answers. Phaonia valida and Phaonia errans is really tricky.
