taken on 22.7.08 at Dunardry, West Argyll, Scotland Lock 9

I have never seen such a huge Insect besides on a pin. I am not a fly biologist so I have no idea what this is. Google didn't prove very helpful.

Could anyone tell me what this is?

no! it cannot be. There is no such thing as 10 cm for flies. :) it is normal to oversize the flies, but I'm sure that there are no flies known with such size. ;)

OK I believe you.

In Germany I would have said something like this

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pferdebremse

19 bis 24,5 Millimeter

or this

I'm with Tony.
Another argument: bovinus does not occur on the British Isles.
BUt the picture itself is already most convincing.
