can you help me to identify this species?
the photos were made in Hunedoara County, the central part of Romania, at almost 360 m, on 30 June 2008
The photos were made by Cornel Alexandru
Many thanks,
Amalia

To me, it looks like a
Hybomitra (though I can't say why! ;)) Any other shots?

wings clear fall for Atylotus, Hybomitra, and Tabanus species. This is not Atylotus clearly. ;) Tabanus has bare eyes. Hybomitra usually has 3 band in the eyes... maybe a Tabanus, or if not... an unusual Hybomitra.
I'd say Tabanus for this one.

Are ocelli present? That should settle the genus.

Let's get the species:
Tabanus cordiger (thick palpi with white hairs, black antennae, borad frontal stripe with heartshaped spot, no eyebands).
