Not Hydrellia - more likely a Philygria. It would help to know which Montserrat - Spain or Caribbean?

Hi Tony! Nice to hear from you. :). Fly is from Montserrat, Caribbean. Interesting- what makes you think Philygria? Not Nostima because of the long dorsal rays?

Thanks for clarifying where the fly is from - I didn't recognise it as a European species. As it's Central American, there may be other genera that occur there, which I don't know, but it has a Philygria feel to it. Wayne Mathis is very familiar with the Caribbean fauna, and is best placed to say which genus (and perhaps species) it is.

Thanks for the direction Tony- the fronto orbital bristles in couplet 41 of Man. Near. Diptera was throwing me- they were obvious so I moved to Hydrellinae....
I've re-keyed and it keys out to Nostima because of the long haired arista?

Compare Nostima spilogaster Cresson.
