Hi,

According to Systema Dipterorum Rhaphium discolor Zetterstedt, 1838 is a valid species with Rhaphium consobrinum Zetterstedt, 1843 as a synonym.
But I also find publications where publications where the name R. consobrinum is used, and R. discolor listed as a synonym.

Does anyone know which is correct?

Becker, 1918, placed the two names in synonymy, and the majority of dipterists followed him, with Rhaphium discolor Zetterstedt, 1838 having a priority. Unfortunately, this species was described by a female, and the Nearctic Catalog (2004) considered this synonymy questionable. Fortunately, nobody wrote that Rhaphium discolor is an "unrecognized" or "doubtful" species. It is the commonest species of the group (former Porphyrops) in Scandinavia, and it is better to consider the types of the two names (both are present in the Lund Museum) belonging to the same species - Rhaphium discolor.

Many thanks for the explanation! The Swedish taxonomy database uses the name Rhaphium consobrinum Zetterstedt, 1843. If I understand it correctly, Rhaphium discolor Zetterstedt, 1838, can be added to the list, and R. consobrinum as a synonym?
