Thread subject: Diptera.info :: First tachinid 2008 - Wagneria sp.

Hi

Finally I found my first (true) tachinid. Maybe in last weekend I spotted a tachinid like this one...

EDIT: Now I believe this can be a rhinophorid. It has clearly a petiole (there are tachinids with petiole though) but this has small calypters hence I think this can be a rhinophorid.
This is rather dark fly. Coal colour.

It measures about 7 mm. The head (lateral view) measures 1 mm.
I will show the body photo more later.

EDIT 2: Maybe a Wagneria sp. according to the Chris Raper

Close up and sharp enough. You just have to work a little more with your lighting technique. Check out Tony T's postings. B)

the lighting issue --- I need a better diffuser. The diffuser I use is very good for SIgma lens, but for this lens is not enough. I will build a home-made diffuser.
A new flash would be welcome. Or a reflector with this flash so the other side of the eye can be illuminated better.
And there are no any stacks here. :P

this last photo was taken by the compact Fuji just to show the way I put the labels. I use vegetal paper that is very good and better than the normal paper because if we put in ethanol there is no damage for the paper! I used edding 800 ink that is great and can support easily even ethanol 95% :D

The vegetal paper doesn't slide in the pin which is great too.
I use a wooden box with plastazote foam as you can see.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
As you know the fly has 7 mm.

Looks like Wagneria perhaps :) Love those parafacial bristles and long petiole ... but not sure if you get others down there :D

Theo, is it possible in this case to know which will be the Wagneria?

yesterday I spotted another Wagneria sp. It seems a very unquiet fly. :|

It is Wagneria, however, this is a very difficult genus in which I have restricted experience (southern genus), so I'm not gonna speculate on the species level.
