Hello everyone,
Can anyone identify the species of this horsefly (Tabanidae)? Ideas include Hybomitra auripila, aterrima, or micans. Found on: May 20, 2025, Germany > North Rhine-Westphalia > Lüdenscheid, size: approx. 15 mm
Thank you in advance

Hello Axel, with the completely grey dusted subcallus (
H. micans: glossy black,
aterrima: ?) it is probably the female
H. auriplia, based on Zeegers, Schulten (2022): Families of Flies with Three Pulvilli.

Well spoken ! Is the locality the one close to Dortmund ? That would be surprisingly north ! I need to check whether records from NrWe are known (from Belgium, old one are)

Hello Eric & Theo, thanks for the determination. This fly comes to me at the parking space (Lüdenscheid, Homert - N 51° 10' 34.9284 E 7° 38' 57.8328) in the near of the nature reserve "Stilleking. There is a herd of 40 Heck cattle. Can we now name the fly?
