Have a nice Day. One Question please? I would like a second opinion on this Diptera species. Can Besseria cf. lateritia be true? This species definitely occurs in Austria. I would be very grateful for an answer.
Kind regards Karl.
Finding data: Austria, Lower Austria, Tattendorf, 220m, dry flowering area, May 4, 2024, Size: ca. 6-8mm

The bend in vein M looks too sharp for Besseria. I think you have a male in tribe Leucostomatini.

Hello John thank you for the Answer of probably Leucostomatini sp.-male. Leucostomatini is, from what I've seen, a larger subfamily with several genera. Unfortunately, I don't know whether all genera occur in Austria.
Best Wishes Karl.

In Austria you should have Dionaea, Eulabidogaster, Clairvillia, and Labigastera. I can exclude three other genera on appearance or course of vein M.

Hello John thank you for the Answer. In the genus Clairvilla there are even some with orange-black bodies. Maybe I'll find it again this year and be able to photograph it from several sides.
Best wishes Karl.

Well, it is not Clairvillia since the dust pattern on thorax is off and the veetex is too broad ... it looks like Besseria to me and its size would imply anthophila.
Pity we cant see the scutellar bristles...

The only regional species of Besseria with vein M ending in wing margin is B. lateritia.
