Could somebody help with this fly? It has Heleomyzidae appearance, with the exception that there are no evident vibrissae. I was unable to reliably associate it with any other family as well as any genus of Heleomyzidae. Collected 21.07.2017 in South Karelia (NW Russia), body size ca. 6 mm.

The small eyes and long arista suggest Eccoptomera. The genitalia are very similar to E. pallescens - see http://www.spessa.../hpgs.html There appears to be a scar where the vibrissa should be - I think they have just been knocked off.

Tony, thanks a lot for identification and link!

I thought about Eccoptomera but was not sure.
And you are right about the scar. It's really there though hardly detectable.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
