Hello, I bought the Empidoidea and the Tachydromiinae book, but for Platypalpus, for instance, it had just about 16 species from 85 spanish ones,
In Lindner´s book I have foundt many more, also for Empis (54 species recorded here, the "old" Lindner´s one has about 42). That nordic books' series are very good and nice to read, but the ones not for european but for nordic species are not really useful here, so I decided not to buy the Empis nor the Hilara book (at least by now). Regards

Hi,
Concerning Platypalpus and Hilara from Spain I could note:
GROOTAERT P. & CHVÁLA M. 1992: Monograph of the genus
Platypalpus (Diptera: Empidoidea, Hybotidae) of the Mediterranean region and the Canary Islands. Acta Univ. Carol. (Biol.) 36: 3–226.
CHVÁLA M. 2008: Monograph of the genus Hilara Meigen (Diptera: Empididae) of the Mediterranean region. Stud.
Dipterol. Suppl. 15, 138 pp.
Best regards,
Igor Shamshev

I know this thread hasn't been posted on for a while, but I was wondering if there was any way I could get a copy of the pdf for Chvala, M., 1975. The Empidoidea (Diptera) of Fennoscandia and Denmark. - Fauna Entomologica Scandinavica 3: 1-336. (Tachydromiinae). My e-mail is paulbfrandsen "at" gmail.com. I am working my way through some Mongolian Empididae and I have been using the nearctic key to get to genus which doesn't address all of the palearctic genera. If there are any other suggestions, I would happily accept those as well Smile.

Chvála's key is only useful for a select few of tachydromiine genera. The best option to get genera identified is Collin's key in British Flies (1961) with some updates for replaced generic names, or even the old key in Lindner (same issue with generic and subgeneric names) but a few of the more 'exotic' genera are only included in that key. For certain subfamilies there are other keys to genera, for example Sinclair's key to the clinocerine genera. I am willing to help out in identifying genera off the forum if you need assistence.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
