Hello, I would like to submit this robber fly observed in southern France. It was photographed feeding on Pyronia bathseba in Mediterranean scrubland. Based on the general appearance, body colouration and antennae, I initially suggested Stenopogon sabaudus. However, I unfortunately do not have a clear photograph of the wing venation, so I cannot properly check whether the marginal cell and the first posterior cell are open. On the French forum Le Monde des insectes, we were puzzled by the whitish sclerites / pale band on the underside of the last abdominal sternites. Looking again at the photo, I think this pale band may actually run along the ventral side of the abdomen, but is partly hidden anteriorly by the shadow of the hind tibia. Do you think Stenopogon sabaudus is still a reasonable identification from this single photograph, or would it be safer to leave it as Stenopogon sp. / Asilidae?
