Hi, could anyone please help me to identify the species of this diptera? The picture was taken in Tandil, Buenos Aires, Argentina, in February 2016.

Tabanidae is a large family and the Southern Hemisphere genera are mostly different from the Northern Hemisphere genera. None of the regular visitors here has experience identifying them by sight, and only one or two irregular visitors have that skill.
Some families of flies are easier than others, either because the characters needed for identification are clearly visible or because the species groups have wide ranges.
Your distinctively marked Bombyliidae was a close relative of a species I see a kilometer from home. The genus was revised for the entire New World in a freely available paper. I could easily find the name for the similar species in South America.
I do not have literature to identify South American Tabanidae, and if I did I would be unable to use it without a specimen. The features distinguishing genera and even subfamilies can be hard to see in photographs.
Where I live flies that look like this belong to subfamily Tabaninae. I don't know if that is true in Argentina.
