Tribe Chironomini.
In almost all cases, Orthocladiinae have no or short dorsal eye extensions, vein M ending closer to wingtip than R4+5, and fore basitarsus shorter than fore tibia. Chironomini, again with rare exceptions, have long dorsal eye extensions, vein M and R4+5 ending on opposite sides of wingtip, and fore basitarsus longer than tibia.
Reliable identification to genus or species normally requires close inspection of male genitalia.
