Hello,

is it possible to ID this Culicidae?

29.11.2015 - North Italy

Size about 10mm, proboscis long as (or shorter) the antennae, scales on the occiput, palpi short and brown, Microtrichiae of membrane well visible and narrow scales on the dorsal surface.

Maybe it's Aedes genus?

Thanks for the help!

Regards,
Marcello

The abdomen shape is wrong for Aedes - I would suggest Culex.

Hi Tony,

Culex sp. was my first think, but using the Palearctic Mosquito keys from Harbach and Sandlant, the key "scales on the occiput" rule out the genus Culex.

Thanks for your help.

Marcello

I don't have a copy of that key, but if Harbach and Sandlant suggest that Culex do not have scales on the occiput, then I would say they are wrong.
