Saether erected the subgenus
Peusomyia in 1970. He felt that the characters shared between
pallidus and the
Sayomyia species were plesiomorphic. He lists a number of characters which appeared to suggest that
Peusomyia was more closely related to
Schadanophasma and
Chaoborus s.s. Let me know if you would like the ref, or a pdf of the relevant pages.

Thanks. I have Saether (1970). Borkent (1979, fig. 36) agreed they were distinct, but arranged subgenera differently. I must have only been paying attention to New World species when I read their papers.
