Thread subject: Diptera.info :: A species of Bombyliidae from Cyprus

This at first rather dull looking fly has I think a very impressive set of mouthparts etc. It was caught and photographed by me, swept from low vegetation, beside Koproulu reservoir, Cyprus on 23 March. Any suggestions regarding it's identification would be very greatly appreciated. I do have the specimen.

Very many thanks

Alan

Bombyliidae!

Many thanks Cesa. I had thought it was going to be Bombyliidae but did not have the confidence to suggest it! When I make suggestions I invariably turn out to be wrong! Nearly 60 Bombyliids are in fact recorded for Cyprus so if anyone else can possibly get me a bit further with genus or species that would be brilliant.

Many thanks again

In America it would be Conophorus.

Thanks John. I have no key to this family for Cyprus so had had to resort to looking at on-line images of the various genera. Two I had found that seemed to have some species with mouth parts looking like this were Bombylella (but with no species apparently recorded for Cyprus) and Conophorus, for which the only species recorded for Cyprus is Conophorus greeni Austen 1936. I could find nothing more on this species and no illustration of this species itself! However your suggestion of this genus suggests possibly along these lines and perhaps someone else may be kind enough to comment further.

Thank you again

Alan

It is Conophorus greeni indeed.
