Can anyone suggest a subfamily? At light, Townsville, Queensland.

Could be Winthemiiini, though I see only 4 humeral bristles (should be 5).
Could you check whether the 'barette' is hairy ?

Its modern name is ' katepimeron'.
It is not in the glossary. It is a more or less horizontal strip above the meron, so in front of the posterior spiracle. It is much smaller than the meron.
This is the meron

Hope this helps

Thanks Theo, that reference was quite clear. And yes there are dense golden hairs in that location.

Graeme
It is actually BEHIND the golden hairs. It should be more or less horizontal,
As farr as I can tell, it looks bare, not sure though.

I've taken away most of the golden hairs and I would say that it is bare.

Is this it at the end of the line I've added?

It is difficult to see in this angle, but you seem correct.
There are just a few hairs on front, but that is OK.
Conclusion: Not Winthemiini

Thanks Theo. Yes the area is in shadow, sorry about that. I could have placed my lights better.

This time, no new ' Monty Python'ish questions, but an ID on species ! level
Carcelia hardyi.
I am very fortunate that you have so few Carcelia
Comment by Crosskey " ... can be extremely similar to Winthemiini...'
That explains my nagging on the barrette.

The species Carcelia (Carcelia) hardyi is listed on ALA (Atlas of Living Australia) but there are no recorded sightings, so this will be the first. To be listed I guess it must have been sighted somewhere but the record(s) haven't made it to the database.

What do you mean by 'sightings', Graeme ?
The type locality of hardyi is in Queensland, Brisbane if I remember correctly.
I was very pleased to learn that !
Crosskey gives the most 'recent' checklist for Australia (1976). Do you have a copy. I'd say you'd reallly need one !

By the way, diptera.org is also pretty informative

The ALA only gathers records that are in a digital format, so records on paper will probably never make it into the database. No I don't have that paper.
Thanks for pointing me to diptera.org, I didn't know about it.
