I am badly confused by this "teeny fly" that a friend posted. It isn't very glossy, but looks very like an invasive little glossy fly whose name and family and biology I forget. In embarrassment and anticipated gratitude I request any ideas.
Size 2-4 mm, location Grahamstown, Eastern Province, South Africa

Looks like Platypezidae.

(but I am not an expert!)

Stephane, you are an asset, if you will forgive my saying so!
When you said Platypezidae, I did a double-take, and then the memories of that previous search came flooding back (not the same species as it happens, but so much the better).
I spent a couple of hours yesterday fruitlessly trying to trace my previous search several months ago. You may be sure that this time I will document it properly!
Merci beaucoup and all the best,
Jon
