Dear forum,

this fly I found resting on house front on december, 8th, 2014.
House with garden in village, river rhine valley, south west germany.
Length about 6,5mm from head to wingtip.
I once got determined a Tephritis matricariae here on diptera.info from same location.
Could this be Tephritis matricariae/ruralis? (I noticed on naturspaziergang.de, that colour of abdomen hairs is necessary to distinguish both).

Oh, thanks a lot, Severin!
May I ask how T. ruralis can be excluded? Is it possible because of the white bristles on side of thorax?

Dear Torsten: Severyn and I tried to see the hind notopleural setae, and we are not sure if they are black (as in conura). Otherwise, the ruralis has usually somewhat more numerous dots in the dark field (in additional to dark setae on abdomen). Thus, the reliability seems to be around 70%. Upper Rhine is the area where T. matricariae exists, so it cannot be excluded. I only rely on Severyn's experience with Tephritis, which is much bigger than mine.

Thank you very much, Valery, for these additional explanations - and thank you both, Severin and Valery, for your time! So, next occurance of such fly I have to take pictures of thoracal side and abdomen, too. Well, spring will come...more or less...soon:-)
