Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Sepsis violacea?

Hi,

is this Sepsis identifiable? I just guess it's S. violacea because of Its abdomen, which seems to be a bit violet... but maybe other Sepsis can have this, too. I'm sure someone knows this ;-)

Sepsids are most easily identified by the characters of the fore-legs in the male. Colour has little to do with it.

alright, thanks for this useful information - next time I'll be taking some more pictures from different views...

How do I know if it's a male or female? Unfortunately I'm not familiar with sepsids at all...

Most species have strong sexual dimorphisms, which are mainly manifested in the legs and 4th sternites of males.
(ie, only really discernible under a strong lens)
