Mainly by the shape of the cerci and in
H. urbica the tibia are mostly yellowish / brown and in most cases they are black/dark brown in
H. variata.
Also...
H. variata is far more common then
H. urbica in the Netherlands / Belgium (based on collected male specimen).
The female in my collection are collected at the same place as the male specimen and I have never collected both species (
H. variata / H. urbica) at the same time. When I look at the specific environment where I collected both species, I can't find any preference in biotope between those species ....let's say, not yet.
