what are these odd little flies with large antennae, they mill about together on leaves and square up to each other. I thought they looked like a very small Anthomyiids but I can find no gallery images that fit those proportions.

about 5mm in overall length

Found in September at Hailes Abbey Fruit farm in Gloucestershire

They look more like Limnophora (Muscidae) to me.

yes L. riparia
