Does anyone know the genus or species of this South Australian Asilidae

It is probably Mauropteron pelago. See the following paper at ResearchGate:

http://www.researchgate.net/publication/258351719_DISTRIBUTION_AND_BEHAVIOUR_OF_MAUROPTERON_PELAGO_(WALKER_1849)_(INSECTA_DIPTERA_ASILIDAE)_IN_SOUTH_AUSTRALIA

You can download a PDF of the paper from there. I sent an email to Dr. Robert Lavigne (the first author) and asked him to look at your photograph. He thought might be that species. I tried to figure out what it was myself without luck.

BTW, Lavigne has a website on Australian asilids at https://sites.google.com/site/australianasilidae/introduction-2.

Cheers Steve, I used Lavigne's online keys, they're great and yes I also thought M.pelgo but good to hear it from the experts
